Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) preserves, protects, and enhances the inland fisheries and wildlife resources of the state. Established in 1880 to protect big game populations, MDIFW has since evolved in scope to include protection and management of fish, non-game wildlife, and habitats, as well as restoration of endangered species like the bald eagle.
Continually evolving, these charitable organizations meet the needs of Maine people in many ways: places to get outdoors, economic opportunities, locally grown food, clean water, protected wildlife habitat, and educational offerings for people of all ages. In short, Maine land trusts make the state a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) is Maine's support center for many land-based natural resource interests, including farms and forestry-related businesses, outdoor recreation, and public access to parks and public lands.
Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) are subdivisions of State Government, governed by locally-elected Boards of Supervisors. There are sixteen SWCDs in Maine which generally correspond to county boundaries, although there are a few exceptions. SWCDs establish local priorities for conservation efforts. SWCDs hold workshops, set up demonstrations, offer educational programs, review development plans, and set priorities for one-on-one technical assistance, at the request of land occupiers.
